FIDO

A research and design project culminating in an app to help combat college students from wasting money through unused or forgotten gift cards.

The Problem?

For young adults away from home for the first time, it’s a constant challenge to keep track of various gift cards gifted to them while also making sure they aren’t ‘wasting’ leftover amounts. Every time a holiday rolls around, they may attempt to store cards in ‘memorable places’ or promise to utilize cards even if they’re from unfavorable places to properly use the money lovingly spent on them, usually by friends and loved ones.

“Restaurant gift cards are not my favorite. These cards often go unused for me.”

Even when gift cards are well-maintained, many users surveyed expressed annoyance at not knowing what to do with cards from less-than-favorable locations.

“[I don’t like recieving] hyperspecific gift cards for local shops—specifically when the relative giving it to me got it from a shop in THEIR town, two states over. (This has happened once or twice.)”

“[I don’t like recieving] food-related gift cards because the pricing always leaves a little bit left to just sit on the card forever.”

How Might We….

Reevaluate the way we handle gift cards into becoming a more sustainable and intuitive process?

Revise the process in how we track gift cards so we don’t always keep forgetting/losing them?

Find a way to put leftover cent amounts on cards to use without wasting them?
